Frequently asked questions
What is methacrylic acid (MAA) and what is it used for?

MAA (methacrylic acid, CAS 79-41-4) is an unsaturated carboxylic acid and polymer monomer. It is used in the production of acrylic resins and PMMA, paints and coatings, adhesives, ion exchange resins, superabsorbent polymers and surfactants.

Why is MAA supplied in inhibited (stabilized) form?

MAA is a monomer prone to spontaneous polymerization, so it is stabilized with 100-200 ppm of MEHQ inhibitor. To prevent polymerization it is kept cool (<25°C), away from heat and oxidizers, with an oxygen-containing headspace maintained. For this reason it is transported in stabilized form under UN 2531.

How is MAA stored and what is its shelf life?

MAA is stored cool (<25°C) in inhibited (MEHQ) form, away from heat and oxidizers, with an oxygen-containing headspace maintained to prevent polymerization. Its shelf life is 6 months. It is supplied in drums or IBCs, with bulk available on request.

What are the typical purity and specification values for MAA?

MAA has a minimum purity of 99.0%. Typical values are moisture max 0.05%, colour (Hazen) max 20, acid value 645-655 mgKOH/g, free polymer max 0.10% and MEHQ inhibitor 100-200 ppm. The full specification and a certificate of analysis (CoA) are provided by KORKİMYA on request.
