Calcium hypochlorite (Ca(ClO)2) is a white or slightly coloured granular oxidiser and disinfectant that releases a high level of active chlorine when added to water. Its most common uses are swimming pool and drinking-water disinfection; it is also used as an oxidiser in chemical processes and to neutralise cyanide-containing wastewater and waste gases in the gold mining industry.

What is calcium hypochlorite?

Calcium hypochlorite is an inorganic chlorine compound with the chemical formula Ca(ClO)2. It is a white or slightly coloured granular solid that, when dissolved in water, releases hypochlorite ion (active chlorine) to deliver strong disinfection and oxidation. Compared with aqueous solutions such as sodium hypochlorite (liquid bleach), its solid granular form offers higher active-chlorine density and a longer shelf life, which is advantageous for storage and transport.

The product is classified as a dangerous good under UN number 3485, packing group II. As an oxidiser, it can react on contact with organic matter and combustibles. It is also referred to as CaClO2 / Ca(ClO)2 in supply documentation.

What is calcium hypochlorite used for?

Thanks to its high active-chlorine content, calcium hypochlorite is used across many industrial and public applications that require both disinfection and oxidation. Key applications include:

  • Swimming pool water disinfection (pool chlorine): the granular product is dosed directly or via a feeder system.
  • Drinking-water disinfection and network treatment.
  • Neutralisation of cyanide-containing wastewater and waste gases in the gold mining industry.
  • Oxidising reagent in various chemical processes.
  • Disinfection of public spaces (hospitals, schools, kindergartens, camps, holiday villages and guesthouses) and public toilets.
  • Disinfection of septic tanks, pits, soil and asphalt; and of household items excluding metal items susceptible to corrosion.
İNORGANİK KİMYASALLARCALCIUM HYPOCHLORITECalcium hypochlorite in the KORKİMYA portfolio is supplied to water-treatment, pool and mining customers in granular form across grades A, B and S. Request the technical specification, a sample or a quote from the product page.

Grades and active-chlorine concentration

Calcium hypochlorite is classified by its active-chlorine content. The KORKİMYA specification offers three grades: A, B and S. The higher the active chlorine, the less product is needed for the same disinfection effect, which affects transport and dosing costs. The table below compares the key parameters from the product data.

For swimming pool, drinking-water and public-area disinfection, grade B (active chlorine at least 65%) is generally preferred. For oxidation and mining applications with high active-chlorine demand, grade A (at least 70%) stands out. The thermal stability coefficient indicates the product's resistance under temperature; a higher value means a more stable product.

Choosing the right grade

Grade selection considers the target application, the required active-chlorine dose, storage conditions and total cost of supply together. If you share your purpose (pool, drinking water, wastewater treatment, oxidation) and approximate consumption, the KORKİMYA team will recommend the right grade and packaging.

Storage and safe handling

Calcium hypochlorite is a strong oxidiser (UN 3485). Avoid contact with organic matter, combustibles, acids and reducing agents; such contact can cause fire or release hazardous gases. Always follow the product's current Safety Data Sheet (SDS), use appropriate personal protective equipment and do not store different chemicals together.
  • Store in the manufacturer's packaging, stacked, in unheated, well-ventilated, closed warehouse areas protected from atmospheric precipitation and direct sunlight.
  • Store drums upright; stack height shall not exceed three rows (up to four rows is permitted by agreement with the customer).
  • Stacks shall be at most 2 m wide, with at least 1 m of passage between stacks.
  • Packaging options: galvanised steel drums, thin-walled steel drums, lidded steel barrels and polyethylene barrels; steel drums and barrels shall have polyethylene film inner bags.
  • Transport is possible by any mode except air freight.

İNORGANİK KİMYASALLARCALCIUM HYPOCHLORITESubmit a quote or sample request for calcium hypochlorite with your active-chlorine grade, packaging and quantity, and our team will get back to you.
How do I get a price or quote for calcium hypochlorite?

The price of calcium hypochlorite depends on grade (A/B/S), active-chlorine content, quantity, packaging and delivery terms. Share your needs (grade, quantity, intended use) via the quote form on the product page, and the KORKİMYA team will respond with a current quote.

Can I request a calcium hypochlorite sample?

Yes. You can request a sample for suitability testing via the form on the product page. Stating your intended use and target grade in the request helps us send the right sample faster.

What is the minimum order quantity and what packaging is available?

Calcium hypochlorite is offered in galvanised steel drums, thin-walled steel drums, lidded steel barrels and polyethylene barrels (steel packaging has polyethylene inner bags). The minimum order quantity varies by grade and packaging; send your request via the quote form for exact figures.

Which grade should I choose: A, B or S?

Grade A (at least 70%) is common for oxidation and mining applications that need high active chlorine, while grade B (at least 65%) is common for pool, drinking-water and general disinfection. Grade S (at least 55%) suits different cost/performance balances. Share your application and we will recommend a grade.

How is calcium hypochlorite used for pool chlorination?

The granular product is dosed into the water directly or via a feeder/dissolving system, based on pool volume and the target free-chlorine level. The correct dose depends on the product's active-chlorine grade; grade B is common in pool applications. Always follow the product's current technical documentation and SDS for dosing.

What is the lead time?

Lead time varies with the requested grade, quantity, packaging and delivery location. If you state your required date in the quote request, the KORKİMYA team will confirm stock and delivery time and plan accordingly.
