What is the difference between TOFA 180 and TOFA 185?
TOFA 180 has an acid value of min 180, a rosin acid content of max 3% and unsaponifiables of max 6%; it is an amber to dark amber liquid. TOFA 185 is a tighter grade with an acid value of min 185, rosin acid max 2% and unsaponifiables max 4%, and a lighter colour. Where colour and rosin acid tolerance are wider - flotation, asphalt and industrial soap - TOFA 180 is the sufficient and more economical choice.
What does a rosin acid content of max 3% mean in practice?
Rosin acids are the abietic-type acids left after tall oil distillation and are measured by ASTM D1240. In TOFA 180 they are capped at max 3%, which suits flotation reagents, bitumen and asphalt modification, industrial soap and binder production. For alkyd resin or printing ink work that needs a lighter colour and lower rosin acid, choose TOFA 185.
Why does the iodine value of min 150 matter?
The iodine value (ASTM D5768) indicates the degree of unsaturation. A min 150 level keeps reactivity predictable from lot to lot in resin, binder and fuel additive applications that rely on drying, oxidative crosslinking or dimerisation. The max 6% unsaponifiables limit also caps the share of non-reactive components.
How is TOFA 180 packaged and what documentation comes with it?
It ships as bulk liquid in 20-24 MT net ISO tank containers, in carbon steel or stainless steel tanks. Storage is recommended in closed tanks at 20-40°C; shelf life is 12 months and can be extended to 24 months with quality control testing. The product is KKDIK registered and comes with a Turkish Safety Data Sheet (SDS) and a certificate of analysis (CoA) per lot. A free sample is available from KORKİMYA for lab validation.
