How does TOFA 185 differ from TOFA 180?
TOFA 185 is the tighter grade: acid value min 185, rosin acid max 2% and unsaponifiables max 4%, supplied as a light yellow to amber liquid. TOFA 180 runs acid value min 180, rosin acid max 3% and unsaponifiables max 6%. Where colour and rosin acid are critical - alkyd resins, printing inks and dimer acid production - TOFA 185 is the grade to specify.
Why does low rosin acid (max 2%) matter for alkyd resin and ink production?
Rosin acids influence colour development and viscosity behaviour. Capping them at max 2% per ASTM D1240 gives lighter-coloured, more predictable esterification in alkyd resins and oil-modified polymers, and the same limit drives colour stability in printing inks and pigment dispersion.
What does an acid value of min 185 mean for a formulator?
The acid value (ASTM D1980) reflects free fatty acid content. A min 185 level lets you calculate stoichiometry more precisely in esterification and dimerisation reactions and keeps reactivity consistent between lots. The max 4% unsaponifiables limit keeps the non-reacting fraction low, while the min 150 iodine value maintains the level of unsaturation.
How is TOFA 185 supplied and documented?
It ships as bulk liquid in 20-22 MT net ISO tank containers, in carbon steel or stainless steel tanks. Store in closed containers at 20-40°C; shelf life is 12 months and can be extended to 24 months under controlled quality monitoring. The product is KKDIK registered and delivered with a Turkish Safety Data Sheet (SDS) and a certificate of analysis (CoA) per lot.
