Adhesive raw materials in Türkiye: manufacturer or supplier?

The raw materials that go into adhesive formulations do not all follow one production pattern. TOFA and DTO are by-product streams obtained by distilling crude tall oil, and distillation capacity sits in a limited number of plants tied to the pulp industry. C9 and C5-C9 aromatic hydrocarbon resin, by contrast, is produced in petrochemical plants. In practice, the counterparty a formulator in Türkiye deals with is usually not the plant itself but the supplier with access to that stream who holds the material in local stock.

That structure is not a disadvantage for purchasing. The supplier layer takes the import, customs, registration and inventory-financing risk off the buyer and carries it instead. The right question is not "are you the manufacturer" but "is this grade physically in stock, whose lot CoA can you share today, and what documentation comes with the product".

TOFA 185 for dimer acid and polyamide adhesive production

TOFA 185's application list carries dimer acid and polyamide production directly, alongside alkyd resin and oil-modified polymer production. With an acid value of min 185 (ASTM D1980), rosin acid content max 2% (ASTM D1240) and unsaponifiables max 4% (ASTM D1065), it holds a tighter specification than TOFA 180, and that tightness keeps the stoichiometry of the dimerisation reaction consistent from lot to lot. Where a line tolerates a wider rosin acid and unsaponifiables range, TOFA 180 (rosin acid max 3%, unsaponifiables max 6%) is the economical alternative; both grades carry adhesive and filler formulations on their application list.

Distilled tall oil (DTO) for industrial adhesive formulations

DTO is supplied by KORKİMYA in three grades, and all three carry adhesive formulations on their application list. DTO Industrial Grade (acid value min 165, saponification value min 170, rosin acid max 40%) is used in adhesive and binder formulations, asphalt modification and flotation chemical production. DTO Mid-High Grade (acid value min 170, rosin acid max 30%) and DTO Premium (acid value min 170, rosin acid max 30%, unsaponifiables max 6%) are preferred where a lighter colour and lower rosin acid are needed, in adhesive and filler formulations, alkyd resin and high-gloss varnish lines. All three ship as bulk liquid in ISO tank containers, 20-22 MT net, and are KKDIK-registered.

Aromatic C9 resin for packaging hot-melt adhesives: a second-source comparison

When looking for a second C9 resin source for a packaging hot-melt adhesive line, the comparison runs on specification. KORKİMYA's C9 Hydrocarbon Resin (CAS 68131-77-1) is supplied with a softening point of 75-145 °C, acid number max 1.0 mg KOH/g and iodine number max 80 g I2/100 g; its application list includes hot-melt adhesives, adhesive tape and label production. When qualifying a second source, ask: is the CAS number the same, what is the softening point range and its tolerance, what method measures the iodine number and colour scale, and does a per-lot CoA come with the sample.

Tackifier resin for PSA and general-purpose adhesives

For pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) and general-purpose adhesive tackifier needs, C5-C9 Hydrocarbon Resin carries adhesive tackifier directly on its application list. With a softening point of 85-120 °C, acid number max 1.0 mg KOH/g and iodine number max 50 J/100 cm³, it has lower unsaturation than the C9 grade, which is why it is preferred where colour and odour stability matter in PSA formulations. It is supplied in 25 kg paper or polypropylene bags, and in 500 kg and 1000 kg big bags.

Viscosity and thixotropy control in sealants: hydrophilic fumed silica

In sealant and adhesive filler systems, rheology control decides whether the filler settles and whether the bead slumps during application. The KORKİMYA portfolio carries Hydrophilic Amorphous Fumed Silica (K-200), and its own application list names adhesive and sealant directly. Specific surface area is BET 200 plus or minus 20 m2/g, pH in a 4 percent dispersion is 3.7 to 4.7, and SiO2 content is minimum 99.8 percent. Bulk density is 30 to 50 g/l, which means high thickening at a low loading. The product is also used in unsaturated polyester resin, printing inks, paints and RTV silicone rubber.

Methacrylic acid (MAA) for acrylic adhesive production

In acrylic adhesive and acrylic resin production, methacrylic acid adds carboxyl functionality to the monomer mix and changes adhesion and wetting behaviour. KORKİMYA supplies methacrylic acid, CAS 79-41-4, at minimum 99.0 percent purity. Moisture is maximum 0.05 percent, Hazen colour maximum 20 and free polymer maximum 0.10 percent. Acid value runs 645 to 655 mgKOH/g. The product is stabilised with 100 to 200 ppm MEHQ inhibitor. That is a storage condition, not a purchasing line item: the material is held below 25 degrees C, away from heat and oxidisers, with an oxygen headspace kept above it, or it polymerises. Shelf life is 6 months.

Turkish SDS, KKDIK registration and CoA: which product comes with which document

Documentation is checked before specification; a raw material whose registration obligation is unmet produces an audit finding even when it runs perfectly in the lab. Documentation status varies across this portfolio:

• TOFA 180 and TOFA 185: KKDIK-registered, a Turkish Safety Data Sheet is provided, a certificate of analysis (CoA) is issued for every lot.
• DTO Industrial Grade, Mid-High Grade and Premium: KKDIK-registered, with a Turkish SDS and a per-lot CoA.
• C9 and C5-C9 Hydrocarbon Resin: no separate KKDIK status is published in the product record; ask for the current Turkish SDS and any KKDIK status when requesting a sample.
• Asking for the CoA together with the sample is, in every case, cheaper than chasing missing paperwork after the order.

Adjacent raw materials: TOFA Rich Distillate and xylene

Two further raw materials feed into adhesive formulation beyond TOFA and resin. TOFA Rich Distillate's production areas include adhesive formulations; its acid value is 178.5, saponification value 184, unsaponifiables 5.2%, and total fatty acids up to C18 reach 65.6%. It is supplied in IBC or ISO tank containers and is KKDIK-registered. Xylene (Mixed, CAS 1330-20-7) carries synthetic resin and adhesive formulations on its application list, and is used to adjust the viscosity of resin solutions; total xylene content is min 95.0% (ASTM D6563), water content max 50 mg/kg.
